This document records the email correspondence that took place between Alex Lam of Integricity.com and me from the 9th of July to 4th July 2004. Friday, 9th July 2004 From : Edwin(me) To : Alex hello i have been directed to you. i am angered by what's going on because i am overseas and my main mode of communication(through the website) is offline through no fault of mine. but i am trying to keep my cool. tell me what's going on. please get my website online again. i hope my data is still intact. edwin of edwinchong.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday, 10th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Dear Edwin, First of all, I would like to apologise for your inconvenience. We understand that it is terribly annoying to have your entire systems go down all of a sudden. However, let me explain. 1. We are a complete solutions provider. We provide server co-location, web hosting, application development, and more. 2. Agonus / Tim Yang co-located his server with us for hosting. 3. Agonus did not pay their fees for several months. 4. Agonus has been uncontactable, to us, and to their clients. 5. We made an executive decision to turn off his server. Due to the outstanding amounts due to us, we were forced to terminate his services and this has resulted in a suspension of all his clients' services. We do however, have a solution, as his servers are under our care. We can recreate a package for you, though you would be billed for this and you will resume receiving all e-mails, and your website. However, we do require payment for this new hosting account. I think your hosting ends on the 12th of August, and we will be more than happy to give you a free month of hosting, and only invoice you for a year from that date. However, we would require you to pay for a new package of RM300 for 50MB before we can activate your account again. Should you want us to get your account up in 24 hours, kindly make payment at http://integricity.com/payment/ and enter edwinchong.com as the transaction reference. If you do have any enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks, and once again, I offer my apologies for the problems you are facing. Best regards, Alex Lam Integricity Corporation Sdn. Bhd. Your company and his company have a dispute so what do you do? Shut down the CUSTOMER'S SERVERS??? And after that, you have the cheek to tell me that the only way I can retrieve my data is to sign up for another year with your company? And what do you mean my hosting ends on the 12th of August? Why is it down for a week already and it's only 12 July? But more importantly, I have PAID Agonus fees worth 3 years of web hosting. There is no way I am going to forget that. My hosting does not end 12th August 2004 because it is running for at least another two years more. This is my last appeal to you. My website has been down for a week now. I want those days reimbursed. Get my website and all my online data up within 24 hours. You and Tim leave your dispute out of my server space. I have recommended many friends who run businesses to use the same servers I was using. Your actions are an arm twisting method as your email clearly suggests. P.S.If you should hear from Sam Choong, he is my legal attorney. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, 12th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Dear Edwin, I run a company that operates to service customers. Imagine a scenario like this. We are a company like Telekom Malaysia. Tim rents a phone line from us for his business. If he does not pay the phone bill, we will shut down the service. It may affect his customers, but that is the way it works. We cannot provide you the phone line as you are not our direct customer. We have no ownership of Agonus / Tim's company and we are merely a vendor for him. I do apologise that you have issues due to the way in which his hosting services were provisioned. I have no idea what package you were on, as we only provided server services to Tim. Our offer to you is to give you 16 months of hosting at RM200 to get everything started once again for a 50 MB package, and RM200 for subsequent years (12 months). Should you be able to get your attorney to contact Tim Yang, Agonus, we will be more than happy to assist you in any way we can. Perhaps we could even recover some of the amount he owes us. Thank you. Best regards, Alex Lam Integricity Corporation Sdn. Bhd. I would sincerely prefer to discuss this issue with you in person, however, my current overseas travel is limiting my communication to only email. Restricting access to my website has caused extreme inconvenience to my family and friends who rely on this as a means to track my travels and trace my whereabouts. In addition to that, I have lost access to data, resources and contacts which are vital to me while I am travelling. I can only begin to imagine the impact this has had on other clients experiencing a potential loss of business and disruption to their services. I find your analogy is slightly irrelevant. If you were Telekom Malaysia, Tim is the direct user of your product, not his customers. In this case, I am the direct user of your webserver, not Tim. Taking their websites offline WITHOUT NOTICE, deny ftp access and demand payment for services that haven't been rendered(or proven) and for the website to be released online again is simply unprofessional. Offering your services while demanding upfront payment as the only solution is unethical and a questionable business tactic. As such, I find that "Integricity" is a bit of a misnoma. Is that how Integricity manages it's business affairs? Hope you don't mind me saying but where is the integrity in that? What kind of impression do you think was left on me? If you were me, how would you have reacted? The package that I bought from Tim is 80MB webspace, full script support, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited emails, etc. RM600 for 3 years webhosting services INCLUDING a domain name. But I paid another 2/3 years for the domain name(RM35 each year, total 5/6 years). What you are offering me is meagre and unsubstantial. My expected 24 more months of paid hosting services has shrunk to only 4 free months on the condition that I pay for another year. Only 50MB and no domain name. Your offer therefore bears no comparison to my original package. As for Agonus, what kind of people do you choose to do business with? How did you ever allow a scum like Tim to sell your products? Pardon my language. Why are you not able to contact him and how do you manage your business affairs? To be honest, again, it sounds like a lack of professionalism from both Integricity and Agonus to have allowed it to come this far. Let us talk plainly. I ask for: 1. My website, FTP access, mySQL back online as before until August. I am not in Malaysia at the moment and this allows me more time as I am scheduled to be overseas until sometime in August. I need FTP access now to update my website and upload photographs because my friends and family depend on that website to find out my whereabouts and I'm sure they are very concerned now. 2. Provide me a package similiar to what Tim offered me and if you can, I would appreciate it if you could extend the months you offered from first RM200 for 16 months to 24 months. In that way, from my remainder 2 years hosting, you save on having to host me for a year and I lose a year. It may come as a surprise but I sympathise with you on the problems you've had with Tim and I hope to resolve this issue between us amicably. Like you, I am already suffering from losses made with Agonus. In this respect, we are both in the same shoes. Please allow me the same sympathy. As you may already know, this is already causing me a headache and if you are trying to convince me to be your customer, you don't seem to be doing a good job by witholding my data/account a long way before it expires. Please consider my request as it is causing me utmost inconvenience because I am not able to access my website and worst of all, I am overseas. I read through your company website extensively and your company seems to be in good stead with many people. That has thrown a different light to what I have experienced so far and I can only hope that my future experiences with Integricity will be for the better. If all goes well, you can be assured of my recommendation with regards to Integricity's products and services to my friends and a host of business associates. I look forward to arriving at a mutually beneficial solution and ultimately, the opportunity of using the services of your company in the very near future. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, 13th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Dear Edwin, First of all, thanks for your apology. I understand that this is causing you grief. I must further explain, if it were in person, it would definitely be easier. I think one of the misconceptions is that Tim resells my products, in some way. I do not offer him any of my products to sell. In fact, I don't even know who his clients are. He gave me a server, ordered a service called co-location, and we gave him Internet access. He paid regularly until 4 months ago. We sent reminders, and tried calling to no avail. Finally, we terminated his service and repossessed his machine. What we are doing is to help people who are running businesses to get back on-line. Many are at a loss as to the next step. Anyone who calls us who were his clients are treated with care as we know they have lost potential business via e-mail / website. For the Telekom Malaysia example, imagine if Tim ordered 20 phone lines, and allowed all the people in his house to use it. They pay him, he pays us. We don't know who he rents rooms to, and who uses the telephone lines. As such, we had to terminate with Tim. The only difference, is we left a "voicemail" trace for any of those users to contact us. And as a result, we can help them get connected directly to us at Telekom. I will leave the rash comments about Integricity and integrity out, and let you judge for yourself what you would have done, should you have been placed in our shoes. All we want to do, is to help others get on-line again, and charging for the reinstatement of a new package is part and parcel of our business. I do not believe for one moment that we have cheated anyone of a cent. I do apologise that you had trouble with your package, and that you paid him for so many years in advance. However, as a consolation, your domain name expiry is 2008, and you will not lose anything there. Registrant: Slackers Inc. Edwin Lalaland Lala City null,90210 BF Tel. +60119674967 Creation Date: 12-Aug-2003 Expiration Date: 12-Aug-2008 However, I would urge you to transfer your domain to your full control, out of Agonus reach, just in case he decides to repossess the domain for whatever reason. I can assist you with that when you are ready to discuss issues like that. Why I am unable to contact Tim is an issue that is left to the unknown. Due to the fact we cannot contact him, we had to discontinue his services. I believe you think he is a business partner to us, while on the contrary, he is merely a customer. You have requested for 24 months, but I am unable to give you that much. The most I can give is 18 months, as I am answerable to my partners for this. I do appreciate you taking the time to reply me with a lengthy e-mail and I hope I have cleared up some of the confusion on your part. Should you need to ask anymore questions, please feel free to do so, and we will address them accordingly. When you come back to Malaysia, you may drop by our office, and we can go for lunch. Sincerely, Alex Lam --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wednesday, 14th July 2004 From : Edwin To : Alex Thank you for your email. I must say I am grateful and thanks Alex, for being reasonable. I regard the package that you are providing as one of a generous nature and I appreciate the bonus 6 months that you can provide in the first year. However, you did not state if you could provide me with 80MB(instead of 50MB), full script support, a domain name, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited email, same as my package before. If you can, then I agree to it. I doubt Tim will repossess the domain name but I understand that I should do it for security reasons and not to worry, I am able to do it myself. If we have an agreement, I will take up your offer on lunch and provide payment when I return to Kuala Lumpur which should be sometime in August. I am sorry but I do not have a credit card and even if I do, I do not like online transactions. I will need the FTP account, email and mySQL connection now because my friends and family are concerned as this is my main way of communication. Thanks, once again. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, 19th July 2004 From : Edwin To : Alex Alex, I have not had a reply from you for 5 days now. What is happening? I need to update my website! Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, 20th July 2004 From : Edwin To : Alex Alex, please tell me what is going on? It has been 6 days since I last heard from you. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, 20th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Hi Edwin, Sorry, but I've been away. There's a conference going on that I am attending. You ought to call or e-mail our support team. support@integricity.com is the address. Anyhow, let me address your needs now that I am back. First of all, our packages are 25, 50, 100 Meg and above. From what I can see of your existing data, you have 98 Meg of data. Our offer to you is 6 months free for 50 Meg at RM200. I believe you may need a bigger package, and I am willing to offer you a super deal at only RM300 for 100 Meg and 6 months free. As you said, if we have an agreement, we can move on and our tech staff will reinstate your account immediately. Yes, we can meet up when you get back. Once again, I apologise for being uncontactable, and if you do have trouble reaching me, you could contact Jek Tan, our Operations Director at jek.tan@integricity.com Thanks. Alex --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, 20th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Hi Edwin, I just got a call from Leonard (your brother?), and he said he was on the way to our office at 6:15 p.m. He said he had instructions to pick up a CD from us of your data? I'm not aware of this arrangement as I have been communicating with you via e-mail and this arises all of a sudden? I thought I'd let you know just in case Leonard isn't really your brother, or something funny is up with Tim. We don't want to release any data to the wrong people, I'm sure you are well aware of that. Anyhow, do let me know about the reinstatement of your account, and we will probe the Agonus servers for data. Thanks. Best regards, Alex Lam Integricity Corporation Sdn. Bhd. I am sending someone over to your office now with RM150 deposit for you to put my website online and my FTP account back. I will settle the rest when I am back in Malaysia. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, 20th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Dear Edwin, Thanks for the speedy reply. I just called Leonard again and told him I received this e-mail from you. However, no one is in the office now. It's after 6 p.m. and we've left already. Your brother is in Sri Hartamas and what I can propose is that he banks the funds into our Maybank account, and we will reinstate your account this evening. Our bank account number is: 514196-319180 The company name is: Integricity Corporation Sdn Bhd You can rest assured that we will not abscond with RM150, as that is Leonard's concern right now. Thanks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wednesday, 21st July 2004 From : Edwin To : Alex Alex, sorry I had to log off right after the last email I sent to you yesterday because I was running late for an appointment. I understand that you didn't manage to meet up with Leonard yesterday. As you can see, I am serious about getting my account/data back online again. Please prepare my website/account to be back online as soon as possible because day by day I go on the Internet to check and it frustrates me to see that notice you have put up, just as it did the first day I saw it. I will try to get Leonard to get in touch with you again as soon as possible. By the way, please do not hand the FTP access, mySQL or phpMyAdmin username and password to anyone else but me. Thanks. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday, 23rd July 2004 From : Edwin To : Alex I see my website is on the way back to being online. Leonard must have gone to see you. Not everything on the website is back in working condition but I guess you are fixing it. I think you'd probably know this already but just incase, 1. the email program is not working. I usually log in through this URL - mail.edwinchong.com. Are you installing a better email program or the same one as before? I don't want to lose my old emails. 2. my CMS is still not working. The comments on the index page cannot be seen. I suspect the html pages are there but not the CMS? 3. the photo album at http://edwinchong.com/mindriot/photoalbum/ is still not working. 4. the guestbook at http://edwinchong.com/mindriot/guestbook/index.php is also not working. Whatever you are doing to my files/folders, please make sure you maintain the same hirearchial structure in my directory as before. I am logging off now but I'm probably logging on to check on my website again later tonight. Thanks. The guestbook and photo album is working properly at the moment. What is the username/password for mySQL? And what is the FTP server/username/password? What is the username/password for everything else? The CMS is still non-existent. It was installed in this location http://edwinchong.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt.cgi I need it a.s.a.p. And also, you gave me the webmail URL but what is the username/password? How do I acquire my old emails? Thanks. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, 26th July 2004 From : Alex To : Alex Hi Edwin, We've restored the data for the cgi-bin, but I'm not sure how it was set up previously. Could you login via FTP and see if you can reset it up? I wouldn't know the installation procedure for your CMS, sorry. It's not as straight forward as the PHP scripts you have. My colleague will give you the rest of the details for logging in shortly. Best regards, Alex Lam Integricity Corporation Sdn. Bhd. I'm sorry but I am not well versed with Perl either. You might have checked this but what is the path to Perl on your server? Based on the file on the server, it is #!/usr/bin/perl -w Other than that, I don't know what to do on my side. All I did before was to upload those scripts based on instructions to install them on the server. You are the server guys so I think your knowledge would definitely supercede mine. However, I can think of one solution - Import my old entries on the CMS on Tim's server, reinstall the CMS on your server and export the entries onto it. There is an import/export facility on the CMS. It also comes with a plugin called "mt-blacklist". Where are my old emails on the old server? How do I gain access to them? Alex, all this correpondence and internet accessibility is really causing me a lot of unnecessary online expenses since the server was shut down and my access cut off(slightly more than a hundred ringgit to date). I do not have my own internet access here and that means I have to use an Internet cafe(mostly of them only on dialup and expensive) everytime and that also means everytime I want to do any FTPing, I have to download and install onto the computer. And Internet connection in this country sucks(pardon my French). So, PLEASE, I really do not want to this to bother me anymore and just get things back to the way it was before. I don't even mind if my files remain on the old server and I use the old server because at least everything is in working condition and my old emails are still accessible. I understand that you would probably have spent a fair amount of time doing the transfer and I thank you for that but I have always wondered, why do I have to transfer anyway? Can't I remain on the old server? It was the same question I asked Tim before the server got shut down but as usual, he never answered and his customer service was really bad. In other words, please help. I just want things back the way it was before, all in place, organised, error-less, all properly installed and reliable. I really don't mind using the old server at all to get things back the way it was before. Thanks, once again. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, 26th July 2004 From : Edwin To : Alex Hi Alex, Why was this message there when I tried to delete an email account? "The following mail names and aliases for domain edwinchong.com owned by the client Alex Lam will be removed:" I created an email account called "webmaster" and tried to log in using that username but it was not possible. The error message was "Login failed for some reason. Most likely your username or password was entered incorrectly." This was done a number of times and it had the same outcome. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, 27th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Hi Edwin, At present, it seems that there are no mailboxes for your domain. When you create a mailbox, you add in the mail name, then you click on the checkbox that says Mailbox and assign it a password. Your username is your full e-mail address. For instance, we created: User: webmaster@edwinchong.com Pass: 16bmail If you require any further assistance, you can e-mail me. Thanks. Best regards, Alex Lam Integricity Corporation Sdn. Bhd. I followed procedure exactly as instructed in the email sent from Sales Department and as you have once again stated below. And I did this a number of times already(and again today), everytime with the same error message. But trust me, I cannot log in. Have you tried logging in yourself with the mailbox you created? I tried to log in with the usernames and password of the mailbox you created but I couldn't. Here's how I created a mailbox :- 1. type username in Mail Name and add. 2. checked "Mailbox" and assigned password. 3. Clicked on Update. 4. Open a browser with the URL pointing to webmail.edwinchong.com 5. Username : webmaster@edwinchong.com 6. Password : 7. Error Message "Login failed for some reason. Most likely your username or password was entered incorrectly." What am I doing wrong? Is anything wrong with the system? I cannot even log in with the mailbox you created. Next, you have not told me, what of my old emails? How do I access them? I need information in some of those emails. Next, what about my CMS? It is not working till today and I STILL CAN'T UPDATE my website. It's the main reason why I needed my website online. It has been exactly 3 weeks since my last update. I need my CMS working a.s.a.p. Next, could you please refer me to a person that is in the office more often and with better response time? I give you the benefit of the doubt and understand you are busy, probably having to attend many meetings or whatever but please assign my case to someone who can solve it a.s.a.p. With all due respect, I am running out of patience. Before I know it, another week would've come and gone and I'm still at square one - unable to update my website. I hope all this problems I'm having will be solved within the next day or two. Thanks for everything so far. Thanks for the reference to support. I just embedded the php code into the template for MT to rebuild. Most importantly, I am stil not able to post because of this error message given by the CMS - "mkdir /home/edwinchong: Permission denied at lib/MT/FileMgr/Local.pm line 104" I have CHMOD the folder and file to 777 and it's still not rebuilding. That definitely doesn't come with MT so it must be one of you guys. Who put it there and why is that there? Another delay! Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, 29th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Please check that the Winguard Pro is not something installed on the cybercafe computer that you are at. We did NOT install anything extra. If you prefer us to change the settings for you, kindly provide us with the relevant login path, username and passwords. Thanks. I used the same computer(also to change path settings) at the internet cafe the night before but it was ok? Anyway, I used a different computer, re-downloaded FTP client, logged into the CMS and changed the path settings. When it was rebuilding in MT, there were no hitches/errors and I was jumping for joy but when I go to the the website URL, it's all blank! the html pages you uploaded were probably all rewritten. I think the rebuilding targeted the index files(main index, archives, etc.) but I don't know with what. Is some coding somewhere wrong? Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, 29th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Well, I'm not too sure about the settings of your CMS, but I restored your old index.html file already. It was indeed zeroed out. I hope as much as you that your system will work fine. Perhaps if you provide us the login for future problems, we can help troubleshoot better. You decide, I guess. I just checked out the index files and it's blank. It shouldn't be a browser cache problem because I refreshed(F5) a few times and it's still blank. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday, 30th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Hi edwin, I did restore it, but looks like it went back to zero again. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday, 30th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin I wonder if MT auto updates at certain times, or when people access certain pages. Where does all the content come from? The database? Can you set your settings right, and try to rebuild from there? Best regards, Alex Lam Integricity Corporation Sdn. Bhd. An absolute path (starting with '/') is preferred, but you can also use a path relative to the Movable Type directory. Example: /home/melody/public_html/blog" I entered /home/httpd/vhosts/edwinchong.com/httpdocs/mindriot "Enter the URL of your public website. Do not include a filename (i.e. exclude index.html). Example: http://www.site.com/" I entered http://edwinchong.com/mindriot/ "Enter the path where your archive files will be located (this can be the same as your Local Site Path). Example: /home/foo/htdocs/blog/archives" I entered /home/httpd/vhosts/edwinchong.com/httpdocs/mindriot/archives "Enter the URL of the archives section of your website. Example: http://www.site.com/archives/" I entered http://edwinchong.com/mindriot/archives/ Which of these is wrong? It seems right to me based on the paths you emailed to me. I have no idea if MT gets it's content from the dbase. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday, 30th July 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin That's all correct. So, how does MT work? How is it installed, and how is data backed up / restored? We can certainly try it out for you, but am afraid that the data restoration may not be perfect as we've never used MT before. But I installed it by uploading cgi scripts that you can download from their website - www.movabletype.org Perhaps your technical questions may be found there. If it were me and if I had the time and resources, I can only think of one possible, least technical solution as I am not able to understand cgi - a total reinstall. That means exporting the data entries, downloading the whole blog in the mindriot folder onto a local computer, basically following instructions found on the website. But I'm feeling that this shouldnt be happening at all... To tell you the truth, it's not what I expected after signing up with you. I was under the impression you were just going to plug it back on and not facing all these problems...both our resources are being wasted here. I'm logging off at the moment because I've got an appointment but do keep me updated if you manage to make a breakthrough. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, 2nd August 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Yes, a reinstall may be the way it should go. We could help you try that out, if we had your username and password, which we've asked for repeatedly, but as you seem not to want to give it up, we cannot do very much for you now. Do let me know how else we can assist you. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, 2nd August 2004 From : Edwin To : Alex Hello Alex, Username : Ripcord Password : yourmother By the way, the server was down just now from 11pm to about 11.45pm(2nd August), Malaysian time. Edwin --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, 3rd August 2004 From : Alex To : Edwin Hi edwin, I believe it is because you are overquota. Some things are still not right. When someone leaves a comment, the comment counters increase(both in MT and the webpages) but the comment does not display. go to weblog config > Preferences. I indicated that I'd like entries of up to 45 days ago displayed on the main page but none of it seem to be displayed except for the latest test entry i just made. And those are the only functions I managed to check since logging on. I'm sorry but I have to attend to another appointment. Hey man, listen. I am very worn out and tired of all this as I'm sure you or some of your team members must be too. And like I said, it is taking too much of my resources here - both time and money. Therefore, as much as you guys have tried to get the CMS back online, it is not working as before and I giving up on trying to get it fixed while I am overseas. I don't want to be bothered by it anymore while I am here so, please leave it as it is until I get back to KL and sort it all out. Thanks for the past assistance and effort.
