The internet connection speed at my workplace today :-

Haha.....beat that, motherfuckerssssssssss!!!! Woohooo... Everyday I'm transmitting data at blazing speeds! I feel like I'm travelling faster than a speeding bullet, like Superman. At this rate, I'm going to land on the moon in no time! For those of you not in the know, 8 bits = 1 byte. The difference in the acronym used is the alphabet "b". The lower case b represents bit but the upper case B represents byte. Data transmission speed is measured in bit while the size of memory space is measured in byte. So if you are on a 2Mbps(Megabit per second) connection like most broadband connection nowadays, you are in fact only receiving data at 0.25MB/sec(MegaByte per second). Get it? This is because,
2Mbps = 2,000Kbps = 2,000,000bps
So to convert it to bytes,
2,000,000bps ÷ 8 bits
And the answer is
250,000B/sec = 250KB/sec = 0.25MB/sec
Therefore in theory, if you are downloading a 4MB song, you should be able to finish downloading in 16 seconds(4MB÷0.25MB). However, internet connection speeds are affected by many other elements of loss(like bandwidth congestion) so it normally takes longer than that.
Gosh, I feel like I'm giving a Maths lesson here but I'm only telling you this because I believe most of us regular folk think in bytes. Not many people know the difference. I didn't know the difference until a programmer told me that the main people who knew the difference were programmers!
Anyway, I'm nuts about blazing internet speeds. I'm the type of guy that is willing to go the distance and dig deep for fast internet connection. Till now, 52.51Mbps is the fastest connection I've ever had under my fingertips. It's normally only around 20Mbps to 25Mbps in the office but that's still pretty damn fast! God help me, I've been so pampered I cannot imagine ever going back to dialup internet connection again, if I should ever have to suffer the unfortunate circumstance. It will be very very very hard to succumb to the usual 56Kbps you get with dialup connection. I'd probably get withdrawal symptoms. Life will turn into just like what you would expect of a dialup internet connection - an absolute drag!
Posted by Ripcord at January 25, 2006 02:38 PMi'm envious. my office's only going at 254.9kbps...
Posted by: red... at January 25, 2006 07:26 AMI think we have a 2mbps server here, so pretty good. There's never more than a few people using it, particularly in the evening, so it's always fast!
Posted by: Someone else at January 25, 2006 07:49 AMFuuuuuuulaaaaaaaaaatt!!!I waaaaaaaantt!!Enjoy it while u can,bandwith junkie!!LOL!
Posted by: madmatt at January 25, 2006 07:52 AMOnly have a 1Mbps at home. Office is probably the same.
Posted by: Kevin at January 25, 2006 07:57 AMWHOA LAN EH! the fastest i've ever been was 20mbps on frame relay in seattle...
now i have 2mbps synchronous connection at home, which is fast already... but you are flying... imagine all the "videos" u can download... HAH!
Posted by: Nik Lim at January 25, 2006 11:26 AMniklim : guess what? they are rolling out 24Mbps for regular folk in London now. an insider told me they are currently facing infrastructure problems, though...so it will be quite some time before it is available nationwide in uk.
Posted by: Ripcord at January 25, 2006 11:53 AMEd you were always size matters, me thinks that you and the rest of the Mr Microsofts over in Reading have stolen all the bandwidth from the rest of the country, just to make up for.... well lets say other sociable inadequacies. So come on Bill Gates share the wealth.
I have just done your test and came out with a stonking 3015.3 kbps or 2.94Mbps.
Then I retested and only got
950.8 kbps and each time I test it gets less and less so I'm now scared that if I keep testing "they" will reduce me back to the pittance that is 56kbps arrghh.
I hate the world of the the BT bandwidth squeezers why can't they just let it be and stop forcing people to upgrade their systems. There was once a time when the humble 56 kbps was perfectly adequate, until the basters decided to send un needed data to us and squeeze the speed until you upgraded to BB. BigBrother and Broadband squeezers are one in the same, both evil. RB
Damn Rip.. That blows my 'cable-havin'-ass' out of the water. lol
Enjoy it, for the rest of us!! :)
Posted by: rome at January 26, 2006 03:23 PMYo dude,

virgin : yeah most of the tests i made were between 20Mbps and 25Mbps but i got this one result which was a staggering 54Mbps and that's the screen dump i posted! haha...
