Surfing in South Wales

Location : Reading, England.

Last weekend, I went on a surf trip with the surf club of the University of Reading. We went to 2 spots - Whitesands and Newgale in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. The water was warmer than I expected it to be. My hands were still numb from the cold but there was hardly any brain freeze or headaches whenever I duckdived under a wave. There were waves but it was nothing to shout about because the waves were mostly mushy, messy, choppy waves, blown out by strong howling onshore winds. But, the parties made up for it! Here are some pictures :-

We were all(more than 30 of us) staying in a farm, courtesy of a very nice Welsh girl by the name of Denise(Pictured in Barbeque 5). Her parents have a lovely house on a large piece of land :-

I couldn't find a spot in the house to hang my hammock which was pretty disappointing. If you look at the picture above, I was seriously contemplating hanging my hammock between the support beams of the ceiling!!! Yup, I was frustrated and getting desperate. =)

On other news, I went with my neighbours yesterday to a dry slope where people who are not fortunate enough to live near snowy mountains go to ski or snowboard. This is exciting news for me. The dry slope is only a 10 minute drive from where I live! So, it's another thing that I can do to fill any free time I may have, which is disappearing rapidly these days. I took some pictures :-

I also managed to film 2 videos of some snowboarders on a run down the slope(download available for 5 days only) :-

Snowboarder 1(AVI file, 5.25MB) - Some dude jumping off a ramp.
Snowboarder 2(AVI file, 2.47MB) - This guy does a 360º backflip on a quarter pipe(a curved ramp)

Phew! That was a heckuva lot of pictures, all compressed and uploaded. Glad it's all up now. I can finally go home...

Oh one more thing....it's my birthday today.

hey dude,

tot u might wan 2 know dat james, ben & i surfed clean overhead waves in kuta reef, centre reef and halfways over the raya break..on some days there were only 2 of us (me & shi)..gets a bit spooky when you're in the middle of no where! water was so clear you could see how shallow the reefs are..! of course the upside is that you can also see the marine life whilst waiting for the sets to roll in.

meanwhile, happy birthday!

catch u later,

sam

wah...good times..good times..So you actually packed surfing, snowboarding, partying, excursion, and farmstay all in one go. Amazing!

That Zouk thingy is ridiculous....don't the management even care about the bad press this can cause? I find the idea of this kind of bouncers as preposterous as the incident itself. I don't go there, but as a matter of principle I shan't ever. What nonsense.

Love your "woohoo" on the backflip vid...!
Watch your ankle on the ramps; memories of 4 hours in Tignes waiting for the bus back to Val!

Posted by: Someone else at November 11, 2005 07:53 PM

justin : nope, not yet!

erinnys : i forgot to take pictures of myself on the trip.

someone else : don't think i'm going to try the ramp - memories of having to walk down the slopes in the french alps after a snowboarding accident still haunts me!

thanks to all for the birthday wishes!
